Public-key infrastructure (PKI) verifies and authenticates the identity of users or computers with a system of digital certificates, certificate authorities, and other registration authorities. PKI creates a trust relationship between levels in a hierarchy that issues digital certificates. These digital certificates contain both public keys and private keys, which PKI uses to verify the identities of users or computers.
